Spyro a read about a boy becoming a man.

Let me start off with my overall opinion about this book, before I dive all the way in.

On the surface of this read it is about Spyro, Brixx’s lil cousin, who finds himself in a heap of trouble of his own making, and his relationship with Cyn.

However! eventhough this story centers Spyro and Cyn, voice is given to Raegan, Brixx and Coco as well.

Resulting in a read that goes beyond the surface level, a read that deals with a lot of heavier subjects that can be triggering like Cheating, Child Abuse, Estranged familial relationships, Disability as an aftereffect of violence and Loss of friendships.

I like some balance in my reads, so the counters to these subjects are FAFO (yups), Boundary setting, Support systems, Healing, and also important Love.

Would I recommend, yes I would, keep your triggers in mind and buckle up to see Spyro growing into his manhood.

I started this read off annoyed. Spyro is a pretty boy that has been sharing his joy stick with every willing female body, while in a committed relationship with Cyn. Aaaaand what do you know… it catches up with him in the worst of ways

Now serving FAFO to a party of one!

He hits rock bottom, without his best friend to lean on (Cyn), and only then he gets hit with the act right stick 😒

One of the ways to trigger my anger and sadness is the dealing of children with abuse. Spyro has had to deal with this for the better part of his childhood. Exacerbating the abuse that he endures is the fact that his mother allows this to happen, and is even applauding this fact.

Because boys need to be disciplined by a male authority figure.

My mind went off on a tangent. All the societal and historical relations and implications of this thinking. And the thing that made it worse for me, is that this thinking is still too prevalent in too many people today.

Boundary setting especially with family, and or friends, can be difficult. I loved seeing how Mrs. Lakia handled this by showcasing two examples of this, Raegan with her mother, but also Coco with Raegan.

There were multiple instances before they got to this point that showcased Spyro’s growth (All his conversations with Royal anyone, before he got what was ultimately coming to him). But here is where I fell in love with their growth.

People tend to overlook the effects trauma (in general, but in particular when experienced in childhood) can have on not only the developing brain, but also on relationships. I appreciated Mrs. Lakia all the more for letting them both do the work to build their foundation.
