“Now after reading those transgressions, do YOU think you’ve been naughty or nice?” Santa asked.
The Naughty List by Mrs. Octavia Grant
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
star read
Let me start of with saying that Mrs. Octavia Grant’s works are not for the faint of heart. After reading one of her previous works, I was in need of some recovery time. I needed recovery time, because the topics she discusses can be triggering. AND Still, I was deadset on diving into her catalogue, because her work is that good!
Let’s dive into my global review of Mrs. Grant’s the Naughty List, a psychological thriller, exploring what type of crimes would be committed when someone thinks they can get away with it.
That is the only thing that I can give away without spoiling this fascinating read.
I’ll give a global warning that the crimes being committed are triggering, if you can imagine it, it was there. However, Mrs. Grant makes sure to not go into detail about the act of the crime. She solely makes mention of them, and the resulting consequences of those crimes.
This to me was an oddly satisfying read 🤷🏾♀️.

SheReadsaLot to Audience: If you’re here still that means you are interested in my ramblings and thoughts, which can contain spoilers… So.. Last Chance!

SheReadsaLot to Audience: Thank you for staying… Let’s dive in shall we?!
“In Proverbs 16- 19, He clearly states his dislikes. Proverbs 16- 19 says, These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.“
The Naughty List by Mrs. Octavia Grant
Main character, passing through the Naughty List is Santa. He is the narrator of this story, and gives the audience a summary about the transgressions of the (26) transgressors. And when I tell you that all of the people on the Naughty List acquired their place on there for justifiable reasons! I do mean all of them!
Some were on there for the transgression of pedophilia, rape, crying rape, sexual abuse

murder (I am sharing a whole lot of stories under this denominator), abusing their white privilege and more heinous crimes.
SheReadsaLot to SheReadsaLot: Some of them got off too light if you ask me.
SheReadsaLot: I’m with you when you right
Audience to SheReadsaLot: Before you go off on your usual tangent… and forget the plot… You were talking about reviewing from the societal lens.
SheReadsaLot: Yeah….

An overall theme that I noticed when reading, these people on the Naughty List were all what society would deem to be “upstanding citizens”.
Members of the clergy, fire marshalls, lawyers, judges, youth councelors, doctors, rich, white males, professor, police officers, child protecive services to name a few.
Some committed their acts when younger, and continued to commit their acts later on in life, because they went unchecked.
Rampant in their stories were ego, entitlement, but also knowing that they could go unchecked based on their position in life, the color of their skin (white), and the people they chose to enact their crimes on. Usually being people who wouldn’t be believed if they decided to come forward or are deemed unworthy just because of who they are or presumed to be, like Black people, People of Color, women, children.
Sounds familiar?
I believe that, that notion in and of itself, made this read more triggering to me. Because it is EXACTLY what you see happening around the world, and (on a grand stage right now) is happening in the States. People going unchecked, because they get the benefit of the doubt, or are given permission to continue unchecked because of their position, color of their skin or riches. And let it be all of them?!
Audience to SheReadsaLot: That sounds so bleak!! Why would I read this?
SheReadsaLot: Because the joy of fiction is that you know that those enacting heinous crimes, will always get what they deserve. And that is what this story will give you… Justice
